ACTANONVERBA! WOODROCK HERO!!! SUCCESSFUL OPERATION GREENLAND CROSSING!
In April / May 2016 adventurer and animal lover, Matthew Burnel walked 540km's across Greenland to raise money for the Woodrock Clinic Dream. In 2013, he walked to the magnetic North Pole (a distance of over 520km) from a town called Resolute Bay and in doing so became the first South African to have completed these two arctic expeditions. He undertook the walk across Greenland expedition in order to raise money and awareness for Woodrock Animal Rescue's dream of a clinic, because of his schnauzer Henry!
Matt Burnell says" My dream was to assist Woodrock in raising awareness and to help obtain the funding to achieve their clinic dream. I walked one step at a time 540 km's across Greenland in April/May 2016. It took 25 days and it was COLD! I am the first South African to have crossed Greenland and also reached the magnetic North Pole on foot. I am challenging you to also support Woodrock Animal Rescue and to donate towards the Woodrock Clinic Dream!" ACHIEVING DREAMS, ONE STEP AT A TIME
Martin Luther King is most famously quoted as expressing his dream which led to a revolution in society. It was a dream that did not happen overnight. It was achieved slowly. It was achieved through great suffering and discomfort. It was achieved by people not thinking of themselves but of the betterment of community. It was achieved one step at time.
Woodrock Animal Rescue also has a dream: to build a medical clinic on their premises to medically treat and sterilize many rescue animals that come into its care as many of animals in their care need to be transported to Johannesburg for treatment.

Fritjof Nansen was the first person to complete the first traverse of Greenland (from Ammassalik to Sondre Stromfjord) a total distance of 540km. We followed this route over a period of 25 days.
To get a sense of what we experienced, watch this video of my trip to the Magnetic North Pole:
- It’s 25 days of sleeping in a tent in the snow and waking up with frost all over your face and sleeping bags.
- It’s 25 days of melting ice for drinking water.
- It’s 25 days of pulling all your supplies behind you in a sled, each weighing approximately 80kgs.
- It’s 25 days of not bathing or even changing your clothes.
- It’s 25 days of almost 24 hour sunshine, whiteness as far as the eye can see.
- It’s 25 days of quietness that cannot be replicated anywhere in the world.
- It’s 25 days of temperatures at low as -25 degrees Celsius.

I am a proud South African. I have a vision of doing incredible things and “firsts” for South Africa and, in-doing so, inspiring South Africans to to make our society better by raising awareness for causes such as Woodrock’s clinic.
I am challenging you to also support Woodrock and donate towards the Woodrock Clinic Dream. Click here to donate to the Woodrock Clinic Dream Project via Credit Card, Paypal or EFT on Backabuddy.

WHY I CHOSE WOODROCK ANIMAL RESCUE
It all started with a dog.
In November 2014 I purchased a miniature schnauzer (Henry). In doing so I was exposed to this wonderful breed as well as the dynamic Schnauzer Friends South Africa community. During March to September 2015, the Schnauzer Friends South Africa rescue team shut down a large schnauzer puppy farm based in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. Schnauzer Friends Rescue is run by volunteer schnauzer owners without rescue resources and infrastructure. Woodrock Animal Rescue NPO stepped up to the challenge and assisted Schnauzer Friends with rescue advice, medical treatment, infrastructure and assistance in re-homing over 140 puppy farm schnauzers into loving forever homes.
According to an SPCA article, the dogs were found in appalling conditions, lived in wire cages and slept in rat infested holding areas. The kennels were found to be filthy and some of the dogs were sleeping in their own faeces. While being kept as breeding machines the dogs were found to have many ailments and illnesses due to the lack of care, typical of a puppy mill. The reality is that every year, retail pet stores across South Africa sell thousands of dogs, while millions of dogs enter shelters across South Africa. Upon hearing of the rescue work done by Schnauzer Friends and Woodrock Animal Rescue, I was inspired to follow Woodrock’s mantra “ACTA NON VERBA - Action not Words”, and wanted to pay it forward and make a difference to rescue animals lives.
I chose Woodrock as the beneficiary as a way to say thank you for assisting other rescue teams, even when their own shelter was overflowing. after discussions with Estelle and Nicholas Meldau the founders of Woodrock Animal Rescue NPO, I discovered that one of their dreams is to have a medical clinic on their premises. I was amazed to find out that Woodrock staff drive the animals needing medical attention to vets in Johannesburg, which is traumatic for the animals, and often wastes precious times when there is an emergency. Having a medical clinic on their premises will enable Woodrock to medically treat and sterilize many rescue animals that come into its care.
I want to raise funds to help Woodrock achieve its dream of a Woodrock Animal Rescue Clinic.
If the Woodrock Animal Rescue Clinic becomes a reality, it will benefit all breeds of dogs as well as cats and other animals. In addition it will assist Woodrock to carry on with its flagship township outreach programme to assist the community to care for and sterilize their pets.
